First & foremost,
Listen While You Work.
Before anything else, I put on music. It’s the switch that flips my brain into work mode, setting the tone for whatever I’m creating. Music helps me find my rhythm - both mentally and creatively. It helps my process to become instinctive.
Time to gather
The Toolbox.
A productive design process starts with having the right tools. There’s nothing worse than settling in to work only to realize you’re missing something essential. For me, three key items are always in the mix - headphones, a sketchbook, and markers. Together, they create the perfect environment for bringing ideas to life.
With these, I can dive into
The Brainstorm.
This is the first step in my process. One of my favorite ways to brainstorm is to create a mind map - where unexpected connections spark new ideas. It’s fascinating to see how seemingly unrelated concepts intertwine, opening the door to something innovative. The best designs start with a strong conceptual backbone, and that always begins with intentional, exploratory thinking.
Once I’ve brain dumped, I can move on to
The Research.
I’ve landed on something to dive into further following my brainstorm session. Now it’s time to dive into research. This is one of my favorite parts of the process - it adds depth, context, and unexpected insights that shape the final design. Revisiting research throughout the process keeps ideas fresh and relevant. The more learned, the stronger the connection between the design, its purpose, and its audience.
After Googling, I’ll start
The Production.
At last, the concept has legs. Time to start making this idea come to life. In the production phase, I start with sketching - exploring forms, layouts, and compositions - before moving to digital execution and prototyping. This stage is both exciting and challenging; the vision isn’t fully realized yet, but each iteration gets it closer. It takes time, patience, and plenty of discarded versions, but every adjustment refines the design into something worthwhile.
